Cambodia to Conduct In-Depth Study of Green Economy Development

PHNOM PENH: The Minister of Environment and Chairman of the National Council for Sustainable Development, Say Sam Al, have agreed to conduct an in-depth study on the development of green economy in Cambodia to identify policy activities and recommendations for a green economy with the Council for Sustainable Development as the coordinator, with the Partnership for Action on the Green Economy (PAGE).

A meeting was held with the Director of the Secretariat of PAGE, Asad Naqvi, with the participation of the leadership of the Ministry of Environment, representatives of other relevant ministries, representatives of specialized departments of the Ministry of Environment and professional institutions, on the afternoon of 4 July 2022. Representatives of five United Nations organisation’s, UNEP, ILO, UNDP, UNIDO and UNITAR, also took part, along with a total of 27 people via video conference.

The Minister of Environment agreed to meet at the political level to define strategies and starting points, and to facilitate in implementing a green economy.

He said that Cambodia is also interested in promoting a green economy, and suggested in-depth discussions with national experts to clearly study what Cambodia should do to promote a green economic system.

On the occasion, PAGE representatives also shared some global experiences in promoting various sectors of the economy to transition toward a green economy, such as tackling climate change, biodiversity conservation, energy efficiency and efficient use of resources in products. This can help increase the gross domestic product (GDP), which will in turn generate income, employment, reduce poverty and strengthen the ecological foundation of the economy.
